The Act of Musing

I had to scold myself recently when I commented on a Facebook post calling myself an ‘arty-farty air head’. Who needs enemies when I’m prepared to refer to myself in such an unflattering way. This comment got me to thinking, and the more I thought, the more I thought, that I actually spent an awful lot of time in the act of thinking.

Please stay with me here.

This line of thought reminded me of a rather lovely trip to the cinema to see ‘Bright Star’ - (Jane Campion’s movie about the poet John Keats). At one point in the plot, Keat’s friend Charles Brown discusses the essential role in an artist’s life of the 'act of musing'.

Now I’m working from memory here (as it’s a few months since I saw the film) but I remember being very impressed at the idea of lying on ones back in the garden, contemplating the next line of poetry, as Keats and Brown would often do.

You see, I’m a mum and my life has never extended to the luxury of such musing and so out of necessity, I sneak it in wherever I can, like when ironing, grocery shopping or cooking dinner (an activity that I have now been officially sacked from, it proved to be too great a fire hazard). My husband is the head chef now.

My children have been noted as saying things like “Mummy is your head in a painting again?” or “Just never mind, it’s not that important,” (usually from a teenager), whoops I must have been musing again!

‘Musing’ may be why artists gained the title of ‘air-heads’ which is most unfair because there is anything but AIR in our heads, instead there is; colour schemes, designs, layouts, choreography, subject matter, poetry, notations, lyrics, stage sets and so on.

Artists work incredibly hard, musing is exhausting. So next time you see an artist contemplating, don’t just assume they’re on ‘down-time’! No-way that’s highly productive and very necessary.

Do not disturb!

Coco Avant Chanel

I hired this movie from the video store as I thought it was probably a prerequisite to see before ‘Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky’.

Though this movie was quite sad it was also incredibly thought provoking and gave me enormous respect for Coco’s struggles as a child and young woman. I’m guessing this movie leaves off where the next will begin. The movie is in French so prepare for sub titles.

Abandonment shaped Coco’s spirit, left at an orphanage by her father, she had witnessed the harsh reality of infidelity in her parent’s marriage and shunned this option for her own life. She declares she will be no man’s wife.

Her style was in stark contrast to her peers and sets her apart early on, she shows the tenacity of any great star in the making, this ability to fly against convention is what greatly interests me. Being different does not come without great derision.

If I were a drinker I would have toasted Coco at the end of the movie, such is my respect particularly for the women whose journey at this point in history was particular harsh and difficult, baring few options. Finding success in a man’s world shows great courage and determination. All hale Coco, Bravo!

My investigations of the greats of the artistic world shall continue. I’m on a mission now. Watch for further reviews of this type.

Hot Shoe Shuffle on Sunshine!

Mr Dale Pengelly works at En Pointe and here he is wowing the crowd at the official opening of the En Pointe studios!

The students are certainly enjoying being his 'back up' dancers!

En Pointe Official Opening

On Saturday night I attended the official opening of the En Pointe Dance Centre and what a lovely evening it was. When I entered the building I saw for the first time a magnificent work of art by Mr David Linton which you can see pictured here. David created the En Pointe feature wall made from gorgeous timber. He also made the reception desk which features timber where the wood grain resembles pairs of pointe shoes. David’s daughter Jessica attends En Pointe, clearly creativity runs in the family. Check out David’s gallery at Maleny or his website at http://www.davidlinton.com.au/

Everything about En Pointe is high quality and no expense has been spared by the owners Leticia and Martin Webb. Their hearts and souls have been put into the design and building of this unique facility. En Pointe is certainly an asset for the Sunshine Coast offering a specialised teaching facility to students of excellence studying dance.

The Hon Peter Slipper MP was on hand to officiate proceedings and though he was a little disappointed he would not be attending En Pointe himself he was thrilled the Sunshine Coast would now have such a wonderful facility. In good spirit he delightedly posed with the class of 2010.

Oh and did I mention I am proudly on the faculty at En Pointe!

More photos to come.

Crochet is so NOW!

For the little fashionista. Cupcake Cutey!

Beautiful on the Inside

All my bags are truly 'beautiful on the inside'. It's something I believe is just 'oh-so-important'. Opening your bag should be a pleasure!

Mother's Day is coming up and you can 'come on over' to my studio if you are local, or you can phone or email for more images if you would like me to send a bag through the post. It costs about $8 regular postage to send a bag anywhere in Australia.

If by some 'ill fortune' YOU don't get one of my bags for Mummy's day - you could buy yourself one!

I'm having a stall at the Coastal Art Awards on the 15th May at the Marina at Tewantin (near Noosa). That should be fun!

I better get sewing!

Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky

I excitedly await an opportunity to attend the cinema to see Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky.

This movie promises to bring a fusion of fashion, art, dance, music, design and a wonderful dose of early 1900's Parisian life. What else could one ask for?

The setting of Paris during the reign of Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes attracts me like a moth to a flame. I’m alight with anticipation to see the audacity of Stravinsky as he brings “The Rite of Spring” to Parisian audiences for the first time. Oh, how I love a fresh work of art, so daring, so new, such unchartered territory. I love how art has the capacity to move people to such passionate opinions!

Sadly, we rarely see this anymore, are we so hard to inspire/incite, so 'seen it all' these days?

I will definitely enjoy the fashion - I possibly would have taken the fashion design direction - if I hadn't been so addicted to dance.

Can you imagine the personalities we meet in this film, the grandest of all those artistes? How decadent, alluring and inspiring.

And let's remember girls - Coco said "A woman is closest to being naked when she is well dressed". Now there's a reason to tell your husband you need more designer clothes!

A touch of Hollywood Glamour!

I love having Fred & Ginger back in my life - they've been 'away' too long, packed up in a shed with my memories. Who else remembers this poster from the Dance Connection? Comment if you do and tell me what the memory means to you! How old were you when you first saw this poster?

Oh, and what do you think of the red? Red is my all time favourite colour!

I am Resurrected!

This weekend has seen my creativity turn towards 'home decorating'. Now this is a theme hubby and I know oh-so-well. Our living room is (as I write) receiving a make over. The new colour theme has seen me scurrying towards the back shed and searching through our long stored items for my much loved, but long forgotten collection of framed Broadway posters.

Oh, the memories of my dearly beloved dance studio where these once hung proudly, are only now (after ten years,) able to be withstood, any sooner and I would have been a blithering wreck.

It's been a difficult journey, coming to terms with retirement! Ha, some retirement - A DANCER CANNOT RETIRE - IT'S IMPOSSIBLE! My retirement has never actually occurred - yes, I tried a few other career options, only to find they were less than anything remotely acceptable, and back to dancing I went time and time again. And even when not dancing, I'm painting dancers. I'm obsessed - It's an artist's prerogative to be obsessive, isn't it?

Well, at least Fred and Ginger will once again be on-the-wall and Gene, Debbie & Donald will get to "Sing in the Rain" while watching me eat dinner. All my darling students will remember these favourites from our Dance Connection Days.

The glory of reminiscing........ such sweet bliss!

Photos to come!

The Spirit of Fatima

"Fatima" returned home this week after spending six months on display at Lillies restaurant at the Novotel Twin Waters Resort. Her next post will be at the Immanuel Art Festival. She's rather sultry, don't you think? I love dancers, who would have guessed?

Who's your vote for the winner of SYTYCD? I'm so excited because two of my former students (now professional dancers) will take the stage at the Grand Final. One with the cast of FAME, the other with the cast of Australian Dance Theatre (ADT).

Miss Penny is so PROUD!!

New work underway

My latest work entitled 'Anyah's Shoes' will be entered in the Immanuel Art Festival, open to the public from 21 - 23 May. I have two others works entered also. I have a lot of work to do! I thought you might like to see the work as it progresses this time.

Sentimental Value

Great Aunt Martha was the original owner of this box from around 1845, my grandmother was given it in 1908, she gave it to my mother in 1974, who gave it to me last week, 2010. I guess I might keep it for a while before handing it on. It might appear worthless, but I'm going to love it anyway. Thanks Martha xxx.

So Into Vintage

I just can't get enough vintage at the mo! Going home to Bathurst always does this to me. I delve into loads of family history, collect as much 'old stuff' as I can find and start creating memorabilia collages, like there's no tomorrow.

This cash register resides in Stoke House, Carcoar NSW - that's where all my family come from.

Back to Work!

Well it's back to work for me, and this is the first cab off the rank - so to speak.

Do you like it?

I love this fabric, the inside is bright red with 2 pockets.

I'll sell it to you for a mere $50.

Now, after a cuppa I'm into the art studio for a bit of painting, there's a couple of art shows coming up and I've got to get cracking.

xxx. Miss P.

I've been on Holiday

I want to introduce you to my darling dad, Graham. He will soon be 93 years old. Here he is showing us a rabbit trap that has been in his family for over 100 years. I love hearing the stories of our family. We are one of the founding families of the Central West of NSW. I really think being so quintessentially Australian influences my art and choice of subjects. I spent time collecting lots of 'old stuff' while I was home in Bathurst. Lots of goodies for my collage work. I really loved listening to my mother reading Henry Lawson poetry and I entertained the family with some of my favourite Banjo Paterson renditions too.
